How to check if ChatGPT recommends your hotel
Ask it the way your guests do, without your hotel's name, several times and from each market. Here's how, step by step.
The short answer: open ChatGPT with search switched on and ask the questions your guests ask, without naming your hotel. Note whether you're recommended, what it says about you and which websites it cites. Then repeat: ask each question a few times, as guests from each of your markets and in their language, and on Gemini and Claude too. One answer tells you little; the share of answers that recommend you is what counts.
Step by step
- Write down five questions your guests really ask. Describe a situation, not a keyword: "Which hotel in Marbella is best for a golf weekend with my wife, who doesn't play?" Mix planning questions ("where should we stay in the Algarve?") with choosing questions ("which spa hotel near Napa?").
- Leave your hotel's name out. You want to know whether the assistant thinks of you on its own.
- Use a fresh chat for each question, with search on. Earlier messages steer the answer.
- Record three things per answer: are you recommended, only mentioned, or not there at all; who is recommended instead; which websites are cited.
- Ask each question three times. The answers change. Count how often you're recommended.
- Ask as your foreign guests do. A German guest asks in German, and gets different answers.
- Repeat on Gemini and Claude. Each assistant has its own favourites. In our St Andrews study, Claude recommended the Fairmont almost as often as the Old Course Hotel, while Gemini favoured Rusacks.
What the results tell you
- Recommended often: keep the facts that win you those answers current.
- Mentioned but not recommended: the assistant knows you but prefers someone else. Compare what the winners' websites and the cited guides say that yours doesn't.
- Not there at all: the assistant can't find a reason to name you for that situation. A clear page for that kind of guest usually helps.
- Named with a wrong fact (closed, too expensive, not for families): correct it on your own site first, then on the sites the assistant cited.
Why checking by hand only goes so far
Five questions, three tries, four markets and three assistants is 180 answers, and they change every month. That's why we built AEOVIA: it asks your customers' questions for you, counts who wins, shows the reasons, and checks again each month. Run the free check to see a real answer for your hotel in about a minute.
Questions
Does ChatGPT give everyone the same answer?
No. Answers vary from one try to the next and depend on the wording, the language and where the person is. That's why you need several tries per question.
Should I turn web search on?
Yes. Most people now get answers with search on, and that's when the assistant reads your website and the guides that mention you.
How often should I check?
Monthly is enough to see trends. After you change your website, check again within a week or two: assistants that search the web can pick up changes quickly.
