Why AI recommends your competitor: the most common reasons
When an assistant steers people elsewhere, it usually gives a reason. These are the ones we see most, and how to fix each.
When ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude recommend another business instead of yours, they often say why, or hint at it. In our reports we read every answer and sort those reasons. The same handful come up again and again.
"They're closed"
The assistant found an old notice, a seasonal closure or a renovation and concluded you're shut. Fix: put your opening dates or reopening date prominently on your homepage, your Google Business Profile and the listings the assistant cites.
"It's fully booked" or "hard to get into"
Fix: show how to book: availability, visitor tee times or table booking, lead times and a direct booking link, on your own site and on booking listings.
"Members or residents only"
Common for golf clubs and private venues. Fix: if visitors are welcome, publish your visitor policy clearly, and ask guides and listings to correct it.
"Too expensive for this traveller"
Fix: explain what the price includes and publish packages for the travellers you want. If you're premium on purpose, make the value clear rather than competing on price.
"Not suitable for this traveller"
For example: not for families, not for beginners, not for groups. Fix: if you do welcome them, say so on a dedicated page with the facts they look for.
"Guests complain about…"
The assistant repeats complaints from reviews. Fix: reply to recent reviews, fix what's fair, and publish what has changed on your site and the review sites the assistant cites.
"It's too far" or "hard to reach"
Fix: publish travel times and transport options from the places guests start from, such as airports and cities.
Outdated facts or a mix-up
An old owner, chef or price, or confusion with a business of a similar name. Fix: correct the facts on your own site first, use your full name consistently, and state your exact location.
"Known, but not recommended"
The most common case of all: the assistant knows you and names you, but recommends someone else. There's no single error to correct. Compare the answers side by side: who wins, and which sites do they rely on? That tells you what to publish.
Every report shows which of these apply to you, with the assistant's own words. Start with the free check.
